The Atlanta Hawks finished the 2024 season 10 games under .500 but still had a chance to get to the postseason. Their season would end after a brutal 131-116 play-in tournament loss to the Chicago Bulls.
That brought along questions of whether the Trae Young era has also reached its conclusion.
If it did, another star should be on the way, as the Atlanta Hawks won the No. 1 overall selection in the NBA Draft Lottery. The Hawks had a 3 percent chance of winning the top pick.
It’s the first top overall pick for the Hawks since drafting David Thompson in 1975. Atlanta had never won the draft lottery before.
Soon after the shocking announcement, many fans took to social media and stated the Atlanta Hawks should take a page out of the Atlanta Falcons book and draft quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who has a basketball background.

Michael Penix, a former Washington standout, could be the Atlanta Falcons’ future quarterback. Despite signing Kirk Cousins in free agency, the team believed Penix was too brilliant to pass up and chose him with the eighth pick in the 2024 NFL draft.
Penix may have to wait a long before he gets a chance to start for the Falcons, but as shown above, many fans would like to see him play for the Atlanta Hawks.

Atlanta Hawks May Be Headed Into New Era
The Atlanta Hawks were on top of the world after Trae Young led them to the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals. However, the Hawks have regressed since their 2021 run, when they were two victories away from an NBA Finals berth.
Atlanta had to earn its way into the playoffs through the play-in tournament the previous two seasons, but it lost in the first round both times.
The wheels finally went off in 2023-24 as a number of ailments didn’t help, and the squad finished 36-46, tenth in the Eastern Conference.
Trae Young may be on his way out, and their new number-one pick might end up being the next star of the franchise.
