Everyone made the same joke after it was revealed that the Detroit Lions were signing defensive end Isiah Thomas on Tuesday.
The Lions are bringing the player in from the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad following a season-ending injury to star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson.
Hutchinson suffered a fractured tibia and fibula during Sunday’s win over the Dallas Cowboys and has since undergone surgery.
Detroit has attempted to shore up the gap in their defensive line with the signing of Thomas, which was announced by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on Tuesday morning.
Of course, given that he has the same name as a certain Detroit legend, social media brought the jokes.
“This is how it should be: Detroit can’t go wrong turning to another Isiah Thomas,” NFL insider Adam Schefter suggested.

“I didn’t know he played football. Thought he retired from basketball years ago…” someone else wrote.
“Michael Jordan just called the Lions and blocked the move. Sorry,” a fan joked.
“Idk about this. He’s way too short to play DE in the NFL,” a user joked.
“Do they know he’s 5’9??” someone inquired.

Who Is This Isiah Thomas?
This new Isiah Thomas was a seventh-round pick by the Cleveland Browns out of Oklahoma in 2022. He hasn’t seen the field much in the pros, recording a sack in 10 appearances as a rookie.
The 25-year-old stands at 6ft, 5in, and raises a figure of 266 LBS on a scale.
He will hope to make his mark in Detroit, given that the team’s pass rush needs all the help it can get following significant injuries along its defensive line.
