The likelihood of Aaron Rodgers being traded didn’t become a topic of discussion until the Green Bay Packers suddenly traded up in the first round to select Utah State QB Jordan Love in the 2020 NFL Draft.
On the surface, the Packers appear to still be committed to Aaron Rodgers, for now. That seemingly changed when Bob McGinn of The Athletic reported Packers head coach Matt LaFleur had grown tired of Rodgers’ act and passive-aggressive style.
“Public niceties aside, my sense is Lafleur, fresh from a terrific 13-3 baptismal season, simply had enough of Rodgers’ act and wanted to change the narrative. With a first-round talent on the roster, the Packers would gain leverage with their imperial quarterback and his passive-aggressive style,” the report read. “If the Packers do indeed want to become a running team next season, they surely wouldn’t want Rodgers rocking the boat and becoming even more difficult to coach.”
The prospect of Rodgers being traded came up on ESPN. After the Love selection, Dan Graziano told ESPN’s Get Up on Tuesday that the proposed trade wouldn’t be realistic and would be extremely expensive for the team.
“Yeah, pretty much impossible at this point. If they were to trade him now, very hypothetically, it is more than $51 million in dead money on this year’s salary cap. It would actually add $29 million to this year’s cap. They don’t have that cap room to do it if they even want it to.
“If they trade him next year, you’re looking at $31 million in dead money. A trade of Aaron Rodgers out of Green Bay is pretty impossible this year, and would be extremely painful for the team next year.”

He continued:
“If you were to do it this time next year, you’d have to be sure Rodgers was done, and Jordan Love was absolutely ready to go and be a star in the NFL in 2021. So asking for a trade is very far fetched, and quite frankly, kind of an insane overreaction. Aaron Rodgers has been there since 2005, he’s played in four NFC Championship Games. The notion that the Packers aren’t are not Aaron Rodgers in a position to win and succeed and win championships is just not supported by the facts.”
Many expected the Packers to use the 2020 NFL Draft to surround Rodgers with more talent after they came within one game of going to the Super Bowl. Instead, the front office drafted a QB and everything but a WR.
The writing seems to be on the wall.
