Earlier this year, the Dallas Cowboys brought back tight end Jason Witten after he spent a turbulent year in ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” broadcast booth.
What may have looked as a way of him coming back to the team for a possible Super Bowl run has turned into something else as the rumors of Jason Garrett’s departure continues to get louder and louder.
Witten did not say he wanted to be a head coach right off the bat when asked by reporters, but he did state that he wants to coach in the NFL like many players have before him and will after him.
Then came Sunday when Adam Schefter on ESPN’s NFL Live stated that the veteran tight end would be considered for the head coaching position.
On Monday morning’s edition of ESPN’s ‘Get Up’, NFL insider Dan Graziano expanded on that notion, and even called Witten being the head coach a ‘possibility.’
“A lot of different ways this can go for the Cowboys, you hear the name Urban Meyer as someone who is of interest to them, Lincoln Riley, You hear if the Vikings were to get eliminated, they make a play for a guy like Mike Zimmer, who has a history there in Dallas. And you also hear the possibility of however remote that may be they would give the job to Jason Witten. It’s unlikely, but it’s not completely off the table.”

Witten, who has made 11 Pro Bowls in his Hall of Fame career, walked out of the locker room last week when presented with the question of taking over for Jason Garrett if he was indeed fired.
“Right here,” he continued. “I’ve spent my entire adulthood in pro football. Coaching is coaching. You want to be in a competitive level. … For me, I think this is a level you can have a lot of success in just because you’re so familiar with it. Really your whole life.”
The 37-year-old has 63 catches for 529 yards and four touchdowns during the 2019 season.
