ESPN’s Mina Kimes offered an interesting theory regarding what Bill Belichick might do in 2024.
Belichick left the Patriots earlier this month after an illustrious 24-year run with the organization. It was thought that the legendary head coach would be scooped up by another team relatively quickly, but the 71-year-old remains a free agent.
Belichick has twice interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons. The Washington Commanders and Seattle Seahawks are the only other teams with head coaching vacancies, though neither club seems motivated to try and make a move for Belichick at this stage.
Speaking on “The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz”, Kimes opined that if Belichick doesn’t end up landing the Falcons’ job, he could simply take a year off of coaching.
“I think what is possible, if Bill (Belichick) doesn’t go the Falcons, is he just takes one year off,” Kimes said. “I don’t think he’s done coaching, but I could see him taking a year off.”
This certainly feels like a good possibility for Belichick after he didn’t end up going to Atlanta. Other big-named coaches like Doug Pederson and Mike McCarthy took a year off following their respective departures from the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers.

After a year away, McCarthy took the Dallas Cowboys’ head coaching vacancy in 2020, while Pederson took the Jacksonville Jaguars’ job in 2022.
An all-time great head coach like Belichick isn’t going to take any position just for the sake of it. It has to be the right fit for the most accomplished coach in league history, so his best bet may indeed be to take a year-long hiatus.
