Like Sean Payton with the Denver Broncos, Dallas Cowboys’ head coach Mike McCarthy needs to learn how to hide his play calling sheet a little better.
On last week’s “Thursday Night Football” game between his Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs, Payton’s play calling sheet was clearly exposed by the Amazon Prime cameras. Fast forward four days later, and McCarthy experienced the same issue with ESPN’s cameras during Monday night’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers:
Now, plenty of fans won’t be able to decode the play calling sheets, but any NFL coach or player should have a good idea what those plays mean. So yes, McCarthy should definitely try to do a better job of making sure cameras can’t get a clear-cut shot at the sheet.
At any rate, the Cowboys held on for a close 20-17 win over the Chargers to improve to 4-2 on the year. Dallas sealed the game when star cornerback Stephon Gilmore picked off Justin Herbert with 1:22 remaining.
McCarthy has been one of the most heavily criticized head coaches since taking over in Dallas in 2020. Though the team has 1 disappointing 1-2 playoff record under his watch, one can’t overlook the fact that he led Dallas to consecutive 12-win seasons in 2021 and 2022.
Regular season success won’t define McCarthy’s tenure in Dallas, however. It ultimately all comes down to they fare in the postseason.
