During the very first Wild Card game to open the NFL postseason —
ESPN’s Monday Night Football team got into a discussion on the play of Andrew Luck, who’s been caricatured as “Captain Andrew Luck,” a Civil War officer.
That prompted the Worldwide Leader to play the song “Dixie” to accompany a Civil War-themed Andrew Luck graphic during the Colts-Texans game.
This was not a wise idea.
The graphic depicted Luck as a Union general being protected by both Union and Confederate soldiers.
ESPN has addressed the issue with the employee who added the song last minute in the production truck, according to Sporting News.
“It was a mistake to use this song. We regret having done so and we apologize,” ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz told Sporting News in a statement.
The video has since been deleted, but this is the internet and nothing truly ever goes away once you hit post.
