It appears one of his old colleagues from ESPN could be joining him fairly soon.
Dan Orlovsky appeared on “The Dan Patrick Show” to discuss Jim Irsay’s shocking decision to hire Saturday as the interim replacement for Frank Reich.
“My initial thought was ‘wow,’ and then — I work with Jeff two days a week and I’m constantly in conversation with him, and my brain went back to all the conversations that he and I have had over the last, like, six weeks,” Orlovsky said. “And in the moment, I didn’t put two and two together. But as yesterday unfolded, I was like, ‘Oh, now it all makes sense.’
“You know, we would have these really detailed conversations about what was going on in the NFL and, you know, teams that were doing things well, teams that weren’t doing things well. Scheme, philosophy, identity, coaching, all that stuff. And, you know, kind of when the news broke it made a lot more sense why and how we had those conversations.”
Patrick would eventually ask Orlovsky if had some offers to be on Saturday’s staff. The former NFL QB answered “not directly.” That led to Patrick pushing for more answers.
“Jeff and I have had conversations about coaching,” Orlovsky said, via Pro Football Talk. “We’ve had some really good, in-depth conversations of like what coaching looks like. Who are the good ones, who are the bad ones. My interest level in it. Where I am in the present moment. That’s when I look back and I’m like, ‘Aha.’ You know, like, I think he was gathering kind of a feel and information without revealing some of the stuff that was going on behind the scenes.”

Orlovsky added that he won’t be lobbying for a job in Indianapolis.
“I won’t lobby,” Orlovsky told Patrick. “I’ve made myself pretty clear to Jeff. I want to coach one day. I’m very much so interested in it. Candidly, as the days go on and on I get more and more interested in it. You miss that part of football. I love what I get to do at ESPN right now. I love working for a guy like Jimmy Pitaro. I love working with the people I get to work with on a daily basis. I have a lot of friends who coach in the league, we talk all the time, they know where I stand.”
This isn’t the first time Orlovsky has been mentioned about possibly transitioning from broadcasting to an NFL sideline. back in 2020, it was reported that several teams contacted Orlovsky to gauge his interest in joining their offensive coaching staff.
The right opportunity is soon to pop up and Orlovsky is sure to take it on.
One day after Saturday was hired on, he would also identify his play-caller. The play-calling duties will belong to assistant Parks Frazier, according to NFL Media. The 30-year-old is in his fifth season with the Colts, joining the staff as one of Reich’s original hires in 2018.
