The Urban Meyer tenure in Jacksonville came to an abrupt end in the early morning hours on Thursday when Jaguars owner Shad Khan announced that the first-year head coach had been fired.
Meyer lasted just 13 games and led the Jaguars to a 2-11 record. While failing to lead the team to a respectable season, there was multiple controversies that led the franchise to their decision. Meyer was considered a risky choice because of his lack of experience at the NFL level, but no one expected him to get caught messing with a woman at a bar that wasn’t his wife, or talking terribly to his coaches during meetings, or even kicking Josh Lambo during a practice.
During Thursday morning’s episode of Get Up, former NFL player/executive Louis Riddick annihilated Urban for his terrible and short tenure.
“This is the biggest failure of leadership, on the part of a coach, probably in the history in the NFL. At least in my time anyway,” Riddick said. “… He was handed and gifted an opportunity where he had free reign over an organization. Shad Kahn gave Urban Meyer everything he possibly could want to go ahead and restructure and rebuild his organization as he saw fit.
“What did Urban Meyer do with it? He made it about him. He didn’t make it about the team… As far as his career in the NFL, it’s over. It’s done.”
Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell has taken over as the team’s interim head coach as the franchise will wait until the offseason to find a new head coach.
