Is Drew Brees ever going to announce his retirement? That is what all of us are wondering after his actions during what appeared to be his final game in the playoffs, which was a lost to the Tampa Bay Bucs.
While it is widely expected that Brees will retire, he has yet to let anybody know whether he will actually do so, which is leading to speculation that he might try for another year. The 42-year-old would enter his 21st NFL season should he choose to play in 2021.
During Saturday morning’s edition of ESPN’s SportsCenter AM, analyst Chris Fowler described the latest on the situation between Brees and the Saints.
“There’s still a little wiggle room because nothing is yet official. Even some people close to him don’t know the full story. Drew Brees wants to win another super bowl so nothing can be off the table. But he’s reworked that deal to be owned $1 million in base salary. That suggested Brees and the Saints have decided to move on. Right now, the Saints are working independent from Brees. They’re trying to clean up their salary cap … And they do want to re-sign Jameis Winston. He’s a guy that they’ve talked to privately and publicly about that fact.”
Saints running back Alvin Kamara addressed the situation recently:
“As far as his career goes and retiring or playing still, a lot of people ask me that and I just say, ‘Drew’s going to take his time and make the best decision for him,’” Kamara told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. “He’s a legend. He’s definitely going to go down as one of the greatest.”
Last season, Brees played in 12 games and completed 70.5% of his passes for 2,942 yards and 24 touchdowns.
