ESPN has one of the most significant followings in the world of professional sports media, and that’s most likely due to its many talents, including the likes of Pat McAfee and Stephen A. Smith, both of whom they’d do anything to keep happy.
As with many networks, ratings bring in sponsorships, which help them pay for their talents and even attract new talent. ESPN may be bringing in new talent, but not for the TV ratings.
Smith is in contract negotiations with the sports media giant, and obviously, they’d want to keep him on their roster, which is why some fans seem to think they brought in former NFL cornerback Jason McCourty.
A source close to First Take, which the aforementioned Smith hosts, told the US Sun, “That is another weird move, something that brings even more power to Stephen A. Smith’s circle of influence,”

The former NFL corner was compared to Shannon Sharpe, the former tight end added to Skip Bayless’ Undisputed before a controversial exit in 2023. Sharpe was said to have been added to the FS1 roster to appease Bayless.
McCourty retired from the NFL in 2022 after finishing his career as a member of the Miami Dolphins, where he recorded 10 solo tackles and 21 in seven games. He only started four of those games.

McCourty finished his career with 744 combined tackles in 173 games played over the course of 13 NFL seasons, split between the Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, New England Patriots, and, of course, the Miami Dolphins.
McCourty has enjoyed a fruitful career on the field, and it seems he is also looking towards a successful career there. It still remains to be seen whether or not Smith will sign an extension at ESPN.
