The worst case scenario popped off on Thursday after Cam Newton started scrambling in the pocket and was tackled awkwardly to the ground that would force him to limp off field and end his night. Newton was seen heading to the team’s bus in a walking boot following the Panthers’ 10–3 preseason loss to the Patriots.
As the team holds out hope that he’ll be okay and be just fine to play by Week 1, Eric Reid has another quarterback in mind that can take over if Newton can’t get back to action.
After the game, the veteran safety told reporters that his former 49ers teammate Colin Kaepernick could “come in and help us” if Newton is seriously injured.
Kaepernick has not played in the NFL since the 2016 season, when he began kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial inequality and police brutality.
Kaepernick is definitely ready, as he stated on twitter with a video showing his workout routine and dedication to training ata high level.
“5am. 5 days a week. For 3 years. Still ready,” he said.
