On Monday, the Carolina Panthers reportedly agreed to a three-year extension with veteran safety Eric Reid, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The deal is also worth more than $22 million and could possibly reach as high as $24 million following incentives, per NFL Network’s Mike Silver.
This deal is not only a good money maker for Reid, but also additional proof that NFL owners conspired to keep him out of the league last season.
“If anything, it proves my point from last year,” Reid said. “I didn’t sign until the (fourth) week and did for almost the league minimum. And this year I signed a more substantial contract. And nothing has changed. I’m still the same player.”
Reid made just $1.69 million last season from the Panthers.
Despite signing with the Panthers last season and this additional contract extension, Reid still has a collusion case pending against NFL owners, alleging that he wasn’t signed last offseason as a direct result of his 2016 decision to kneel for the national anthem alongside former 49ers teammate Colin Kaepernick in protest of social and racial injustice.
The veteran safety tallied 73 tackles, five pass breakups, one interception and a sack in 13 games for the Panthers in 2018.
