Hours before their Monday night showdown with the New York Giants, the Dallas Cowboys received a promising update on the status of quarterback Dak Prescott.
The 29-year-old suffered a hand injury in the team’s Week 1 home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a 19-3 Dallas loss. Prescott needed surgery and hasn’t played since the season opener.
According to a report from ESPN’s Todd Archer, Dallas’ starting quarterback is set to have the stitches in his right thumb removed ahead of the Cowboys’ Week 3 game. Archer added that Prescott’s return “is predicated on his grip strength but he is continuing to make progress.”
If Dallas had placed the 2016 Offensive Rookie of the Year on the IR, he would have had to miss a minimum of four games. But the Cowboys decided against that, believing that he’d be able to return within four weeks.
With Prescott out for the Cowboys’ Week 2 home game against the Cincinnati Bengals, head coach Mike McCarthy had little choice but to roll with backup Cooper Rush. The latter pieced together a superb performance, completing 19 of 31 pass attempts for 235 yards and a touchdown in a 20-17 Dallas victory.
In Week 1 against the Buccaneers, Prescott completed a measly 48.3 percent of his pass attempts for 134 yards, zero touchdowns and one interception. The absences of standout receiver Michael Gallup and perennial Pro Bowl offensive tackle Tyron Smith clearly affected the Dallas offense that night. There is hope that Gallup will make his season debut very soon, perhaps as early as Sunday.
