A veteran defensive lineman on the Atlanta Falcons may end up retiring for a second time at the age of 29.
Per Josh Kendall of The Athletic, Atlanta head coach Arthur Smith announced that defensive tackle Eddie Goldman may retire. Smith said that Goldman is going through a personal matter, and that they’ll get his answer by Saturday.
Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, 10-year veteran and defensive tackle Justin Ellis signed with Atlanta following his workout. As Kendall notes, that’s a strong indicator that Goldman will be retiring.
The Falcons signed Goldman last offseason, but he wound up retiring soon after agreeing to a deal. In March, Goldman returned to the Falcons, though it certainly looks like he’ll never end up playing a down for them.

Goldman played six seasons for the Bears (2015 to 2019 and 2021), as he opted out of the 2020 season because of the COVID-19 pandemic. For his career, Goldman has 13 sacks, two fumble recoveries and 175 combined tackles.
The Falcons haven’t made the playoffs since the 2017 season. They’ll open their 2023 campaign with a home contest against the NFC South division rival Carolina Panthers on Sept. 10.
