The Philadelphia Eagles have made another notable change to their linebacker corps following an ugly Week 13 blowout loss at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Eagles announced on X/Twitter that they have waived linebacker Christian Elliss. Wide receiver Greg Ward was also added to the practice squad, while fellow WR Cam Sims was released.
The waiving of Elliss comes two days after the Eagles signed former Indianapolis Colts Pro Bowler Shaq Leonard to a one-year deal. Leonard was released by the Colts amid a frustrating season, giving him a much-needed fresh start on Philly’s defense.
The 24-year-old Elliss was in his third season with the Eagles. Sunday marked his first career start, and he finished the day with six total tackles.
Philadelphia’s defense, particularly the front seven, was a major strength a year ago. The team racked up 70 sacks and ranked eighth in scoring defense (20.2 points allowed per game).
So far in 2023, however, they rank a disappointing 24th in scoring D (24.0 points allowed per game). As well, the vaunted front seven has just 34 sacks this season, with Haason Reddick (9.5 sacks) and Josh Sweat (6.5) the only candidates to finish the year with double-digit QB takedowns.
