It took 20+ years, but Jeffrey Lurie is finally the proud owner of a Lombardi Trophy, but it did not come without its regrets.
The Philadelphia Eagles owner recently spoke on both his successes and failures during his 25 years as owner with Sheil Kapadia of The Athletic and admitted there is one mistake that stands out from them all.
Lurie says his decision to give former head coach Chip Kelly personnel control in 2014 was his biggest regret ever.
“I don’t regret the hiring of him because it was done with a really good thought process. But, yes, I would say I regret giving him the kind of authority I gave him, yeah. That’s an easy one,” Lurie said.
Lurie stated giving him full control was necessary at the time to figure out what he had in the coach. He soon found out.
Kelly’s biggest decision came when he traded LeSean McCoy, Nick Foles and released Jeremy Maclin prior to the 2015 campaign. Not to mention, he shockingly released WR DeSean Jackson during the prior offseason. Jackson has since returned to the franchise.
Kelly went 26-21 in his almost three seasons before he was ultimately fired before the Week 17 game in 2015.
