The Philadelphia Eagles were of the view that the Arizona Cardinals made illegal contact in order to get Jonathan Gannon in as their head coach. So they’re settling their dispute via means of a trade.
Gannon was the Eagles’ defensive coordinator during the 2022 season but was appointed as the Cardinals’ head coach shortly after they lost the Super Bowl.
The teams have released a joint statement in which they’ve revealed that the Eagles are trading their No. 94 pick for this year’s draft plus a 2024 fifth-round pick for the Cards’ No. 66 pick for 2023.
Arizona made contact with Gannon just hours after the Eagles’ NFC Championship Game, which was illegal, per NFL rules.
“The Arizona Cardinals and Philadelphia Eagles have agreed on the settlement of an issue concerning an instance of impermissible contact by Arizona during its head coaching search this past January,” the joint statement reads.
“The Cardinals self-reported to the National Football League that General Manager Monti Ossenfort had a phone conversation with then-Eagles Defensive Coordinator Jonathan Gannon in the days following the NFC Championship Game, a period during which contact is not permitted under the League’s Anti-Tampering Policy.
“To resolve the matter between the two clubs, the Cardinals and Eagles have agreed to swap third-round picks in the 2023 NFL Draft and the Cardinals receive Philadelphia’s fifth-round selection in 2024.”
The Cardinals will hope to see an improvement under Gannon after going 4-13 last season with Kliff Kingsbury as their head coach.

The new HC will have his work cut out for him as quarterback Kyler Murray is recovering from a torn meniscus and might not be ready to suit up at the start of next term. They’re also expected to trade wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, with the Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs, or Baltimore Ravens thought to be the favorites to land him.
