It’s unfortunate that the tragic loss of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins had to bring about so many insensitive takes.
Easily the most disgusting of them all was the one that came from former NFL executive and current analyst Gil Brandt, who thought it would be a good idea to suggest that, had Haskins stayed in school for another year, he wouldn’t have been doing “silly things” like ‘jogging on a highway.’
Shockingly, that wasn’t even the worst thing to come out of Brandt’s mouth during his appearance on NFL Radio. He also suggested that Haskins was “living to be dead.”
That’s already a horrible way to describe someone who’s still alive, but to say it about a 24-year-old man who has just passed away is way over the line. Haskins was a well-respected player and teammate among his NFL peers, and one of his teammates couldn’t help but voice his disgust with Brandt on Saturday.
After hearing what Brandt had to say about his former teammate, Steelers defensive lineman Cam Heyward quickly came to Haskins’ defense. In his Tweet, he warned the 90-year-old former Cowboys executive not to ‘speak on his friend.’ Heyward also called Brandt’s words “disgraceful.”

Regardless of what Brandt thinks, Haskins was clearly beloved within the NFL community, as many have not only shared their grief and condolences, but also come to his defense following some shady reports on his passing.
