Almost nobody (if anyone at all) in the football business knows more about Sean Payton than former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees.
The two future Hall of Fame inductees spent 15 seasons together in New Orleans (2006 to 2020), after all. So Denver Broncos fans might be interested to hear what Brees had to say on his former head coach.
Many expect the Broncos to move on from quarterback Russell Wilson this offseason and start afresh at the position. Wilson was benched for Denver’s final two games so that the club could avoid having to pay injury guarantees on his contract.
Speaking on “Pro Football Talk Live” (h/t Will Peterson of Denver Sports), Brees suggested that Payton and the Broncos will address their need for a new quarterback at April’s 2024 NFL Draft:
“There’s always a shakeup, you know what I’m saying? You know, look, there’s some talented guys in the draft. Unfortunately, they traded quite a bit to get Russ in the first place, so if you’re in a position where you love one of these guys and are going to trade up, do you have the assets? I do know this, you really do have to build your team through the draft.”
The Broncos have the No. 12 pick in this year’s draft. Barring a blockbuster trade to move up, the Broncos won’t get the chance to select either of the top three quarterbacks in USC’s Caleb Williams, North Carolina’s Drake Maye or LSU’s Jayden Daniels.

If they stay at 12, though, the likes of Oregon’s Bo Nix, Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. and Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy could be the options for Payton and company.
