PointsBet thought they were doing something cool with a marketing ploy, but it turned bad for them in the worst way.
Former NFL quarterback Drew Brees, while filming a commercial for PointsBet sports book, was apparently struck by lightning. However, he actually wasn’t but fans did not know that initially.
Drew Brees is just fine. After about an hour, PointsBet would finally stop pretending something happened by releasing a video showing Brees giving out a statement that he was alive and it was all a marketing ploy to roll out some different type of bets.
Before the released video, Brees texted ESPN’s Saints reporter, Kat Terrell, to let everyone know that “he’s good and that he did not get struck by lightning.” He had noted earlier in the week that he was headed to a “top-secret location” to film a commercial for a sportsbook.
According to the video posted above, that location turned out to be the Catatumbo River in Venezuela, which is famous for the amount of lightning it receives.
Based on the reaction from the initial video, Brees will be unlikely to do a marketing ploy like this ever again.
