Every NFL fan loves a hilarious mic’d up moment, and Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel provided one of the best of the 2022 season on Sunday.
Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is enjoying the best season of his young career, and the success of Miami’s rookie head coach is a key reason why. In Sunday’s Week 12 home game against the Houston Texans, Tagovailoa threw for 299 yards and a touchdown in a 30-15 victory.
McDaniel was clearly in a good mood during Sunday’s cakewalk victory. So much so that he was comfortable enough to openly critique his star quarterback on the sidelines.
In the clip below, McDaniel tells Tagovailoa about a time where he woke up early in the morning and decided to YouTube search some of the quarterback’s high school tape. McDaniel tells the former Alabama product that his “technique was trash”, which of course drew some laughs from Tagovailoa himself.
McDaniel spent the 2021 season as the San Francisco 49ers’ offensive coordinator, and his efforts helped the team to an NFC Championship Game appearance. A week before the Super Bowl, the Dolphins hired McDaniel as their new head coach.
Needless to say, Dolphins GM Chris Grier hit a home run with the hiring. McDaniel has helped unlock the No. 5 pick of the 2020 draft following inconsistent rookie and sophomore seasons.

Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle have all enjoyed All-Pro level seasons. Entering Week 13, Miami has the sixth-best scoring offense with an average of 25.6 points per game. If it weren’t for Nick Sirianni’s performance with the Philadelphia Eagles, perhaps McDaniel would be viewed as the NFL Coach of the Year front-runner.
McDaniel will return to San Francisco this Sunday when his 8-3 Dolphins take on the 49ers. A Miami win, coupled with a Buffalo Bills loss to the New England Patriots, would have the Dolphins in sole possession of first place in the AFC East.
