Carolina Panthers’ wide receiver DJ Chark appears to have avoided a serious injury.
Per Joe Person of The Athletic, the veteran wideout was absent from practice on Wednesday with an injury. Head coach Frank Reich wouldn’t specify the injury, and Person reported that it didn’t “sound great.”
But in an update, Person reported that Chark suffered a hamstring injury, and a source informed him that “it’s not considered serious.”
The Panthers signed the former Jacksonville Jaguar and Detroit Lion to a one-year pact worth $5 million in free agency. Carolina’s new-look receiving corps also added wideout Adam Thielen, running back Miles Sanders and tight end Hayden Hurst in free agency.
Carolina traded up via the Chicago Bears for the top selection in this year’s draft to take Alabama quarterback Bryce Young. The former Crimson Side star will work alongside Frank Reich, who previously served as the Indianapolis Colts’ head coach.

Chark’s best season came with the Jaguars in 2019, when he put up 73 catches for 1,008 yards and eight touchdowns. He hasn’t come close to matching those totals since, but perhaps a move to Carolina will help him regain that Pro Bowl-like form.
In 11 games for the Lions last season, Chark caught 30 passes for 502 yards and three touchdowns. Chark and the Panthers will open their 2023 season with a road tilt against the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 10.
