Bill Belichick has always been known to have an interesting personality. His shrewd coaching skills, tactical brilliance, and intensity made the former New England Patriots’ GM quite an influence on and off the field. However, despite his impeccable game-reading skills, Belichick never shirked away from getting a little quirky. Likewise, in a recent recollection of Brian Hoyer and David Andrews, one of Belichick’s most interesting tactics came to the limelight. And he did all these apparently to impress Charles Barkley!
What Did Bill Belichick Make The Patriots Do?
QB Brian Hoyer and Center David Andrews recently appeared in a recent episode of ‘The Quick Snap’ podcast. Speaking about their former General Manager, the duo mentioned an interesting incident involving Belichick and Charles Barkley. Preparing for their big Super Bowl LIII game against the Rams, Belichick implemented a unique idea.
To impress Charles Barkley, the former GM asked the players to incorporate Barkley’s name into their offensive training. Belichick was so fixated on this that he directed the team to use the drills even if they were not something the Patriots would have actually used.
Elaborating on the experience, Andrews stated, “We had a play that was a no-huddle, and the code word was ‘Charles Barkley… Bill walked over to [offensive coordinator] Josh [McDaniels] and said, ‘Hey, you see Barkley over there? Run that play, let him hear it!’” Hearing the instructions, McDaniels hesitated for a moment.
But he was soon pushed by Belichick, who said, “Oh, it doesn’t matter—just do it.” Immediately, Tom Brady understood the cue and yelled ‘Charles Barkley’ loudly. This was a pleasant surprise for Barkley, who was found smiling from the sidelines. And as for the game itself, well, the tactics did seem to work out.
Did Bill Belichick Win With The Charles Barkley Play?
With an important match such as the Super Bowl, the Patriots’ players’ were facing the heat. Andrews commented on their unique practice session right before a high-voltage game, “Here we are, getting ready for the Super Bowl, and Bill just wants to pump up Charles Barkley.” But in reality, the tactics did work out just fine.
