Back in October, Chicago Bears legend Dick Butkus died at the age of 80.
The death certificate of the legend was released this week and it showed he died after suffering a stroke, according to the death certificate obtained by TMZ. The certificate lists a “cerebrovascular accident” as the cause of death, which is more commonly known as a stroke.
The Hall of Fame linebacker also suffered from atrial fibrillation – an irregular heartbeat, high cholesterol, and atherosclerosis – clogging of the body’s arteries.
His death certificate also stated that in 2001, Butkus underwent coronary bypass surgery.
Back in October, the Bears organization shared a statement from Butkus’ family that the retired athlete “died peacefully in his sleep overnight.”
“The Butkus Family confirms that football and entertainment legend Dick Butkus died peacefully in his sleep overnight at home in Malibu, Calif.,” the statement said. “The Butkus family is gathering with Dick’s wife Helen. They appreciate your prayers and support.”

His professional football career began in college where he was a linebacker at the University of Illinois from 1962 to 1964. The linebacker was a first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, an eight-time Pro Bowler, a five-time All-Pro, and a member of two All-Decade teams.
In 2019, Butkus was named to the NFL’s 100th Anniversary All-Time Team.
He was and is still known as one of the most feared players in the game’s history.
