Henry Ruggs had some support at court on Wednesday when he found out that he would be spending at least three years in prison.
Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith was excused from practice in order to attend the sentencing of his former college teammate. Smith missed practice to be in Las Vegas to support former Alabama teammate Henry Ruggs III, E.J. Smith of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
Ruggs had pleaded guilty in May to two charges after originally facing five.
On Wednesday, Ruggs was sentenced to not less than three years and not more than 10 years in prison for his role in a fatal wreck that took the life of 23-year-old Las Vegas resident Tina Tintor and her dog on Nov. 2, 2021.
Judge Jennifer Schwartz of the 8th Judicial District sentenced Ruggs based on the plea agreement. After three years of incarceration by the Nevada Department of Corrections, Ruggs will be eligible to be considered for parole.
Smith and Ruggs played as teammates for the Crimson Tide in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Smith would stay for one more year and won the Heisman Trophy in 2020.

The Las Vegas Raiders chose Ruggs at No. 12 in the 2020 NFL Draft while the Eagles chose Smith at No. 10 in the 2021 NFL Draft.
The Raiders released Ruggs on the day of his arrest. He is unlikely to get a shot to be in the league after his sentencing is done, but we have seen crazier things happen.
