Earlier this month former New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty announced his retirement after 13 seasons in the NFL, all with the Patriots. McCourty enjoyed a great career as he is a three time Super Bowl Champion as well as two-time Pro Bowler and was named as a Second-team All Pro on three separate occasions.
During a recent appearance on former teammate Chris Long’s Green Light podcast, McCourty shared a hilarious and also surprising story about head coach Bill Belichick’s son and defensive coach Steve Belichick and how brutally honest he was with the defensive backs when he was introduced as the team’s new safeies coach in 2016.
“He walks in and goes ‘Yo, I’m going to be honest with y’all. I don’t know what the off I’m doing right now. My dad told me two weeks ago that I was even going to have this job.”
Hats off to Steve for just being honest with the players. As mentioned by McCourty, his honesty went a long way to earning the respect of the veteran players on the team.
The son of the great Bill Belichick has now been coaching with the Patriots for over a decade, starting off as a Defensive Assistant in 2012. He has spent the last three seasons as the outside linebackers coach.
With Bill turning 71 years old in the near future, it appears as though his tenure with New England may soon be coming to an end. It would make total sense that Bill and Patriots owner Robert Kraft are grooming the younger Belichick to one day take over for his father once he is ready to step away.
