The Detroit Lions have bolstered their defense by signing a former Seattle Seahawks star pass rusher who helped the club to its first ever Super Bowl 10 years ago.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Lions are signing Bruce Irvin to their practice squad, via agent Daniele Salazar. The 36-year-old spent the 2022 season with the Seahawks, his third stint with the organization.
Irvin played for the Seahawks from 2012 to 2015, helping them to a Super Bowl 47 championship in his sophomore year. Irvin also played for the Oakland Raiders (2016 to 2018), Atlanta Falcons (part of the 2018 season), Carolina Panthers (2019) and Chicago Bears (2021).
The West Virginia product returned to Seattle for the 2020 and 2022 seasons. In the former year, his season was cut short when he suffered a torn ACL in Week 2.
The 36-year-old Irvin has posted 55.5 career sacks and 16 forced fumbles. He posted a career-high 8.5 sacks in 2019 but also had eight-sack seasons with Seattle and Oakland in 2012 and 2017, respectively.
Irvin joins a surging 7-2 Detroit team that is on the verge of winning its first division title since the 1993 season. He brings championship experience to a prolific front seven led by Aidan Hutchinson, Alim McNeill and Alex Anzalone.
