The Detroit Lions have revealed the design for their alternate helmet ahead of next season, having teased an unveiling earlier this week.
The design, which has received mixed reviews online, bears a classic look and an old logo. However, the helmet itself is pretty modern while the color is easy on the eyes, with the matt blue marking the first time since the 1950s that the franchise has ever presented a helmet that isn’t mostly silver.
The Lions made the reveal in a short video of the players and the coach, Dan Campbell, reacting to the design.

In 2022, the NFL set a new rule in force which permits teams to design a second alternate helmet. Team president Rod Wood noted that the Lions would not be releasing a new helmet the first year they’re allowed to but would be working on one.

“We’re not doing that this year because our throwbacks really just take the current logo off, but other teams are adding it because they can go back to a throwback with a different helmet,” Wood said at the time. “We may look at a different helmet as part of this as well as the change to the uniforms, but just started the process. We haven’t really sat down with Nike yet and gone through a design.”
The Lions opted not to make new uniforms this year but they are expected to unveil updated threads in 2024.
As for the new headgear, the Lions will not be able to wear them with standard home or away kits as alternate helmets can only be matched with throwback, color rush, or alternate unis, per league rules.
