Georgia Bulldogs defensive tackle Jalen Carter was once viewed as the consensus pick to go first overall in this year’s draft, but it’s now anybody’s guess when he’ll be taken.
On Jan. 15, Carter was involved in a car accident that killed teammate Devin Willock and Georgia staff member Chandler LeCroy. An arrest warrant was issued for him on Mar. 1, and Carter turned himself in.
The 22-year-old Carter pled no contest to a pair of misdemeanor charges and was sentenced to 12 months probation, fined $1,000 and ordered to perform 80 hours of community service.
One team to keep an eye on in the Carter sweepstakes? The Detroit Lions, who hold the No. 6 selection courtesy of the Los Angeles Rams thanks to the 2021 Matthew Stafford blockbuster trade.
Per the Lions’ Pride of Detroit SB Nation site, Detroit general manager Brad Holmes revealed that he had a good visit with the Georgia product. Holmes also admitted that he “felt better about” Carter.
The Carolina Panthers are a virtual lock to take a quarterback with the No. 1 selection, likely Alabama’s Bryce Young or Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud. The Houston Texans, owners of the No. 2 pick, are expected to take who remains between Young and Stroud.

It gets interesting at No. 3, where the Arizona Cardinals are slated to pick. They could hold that selection or simply trade it up, but they certainly won’t take a quarterback with Kyler Murray already under contract long-term.
At No. 4, the Indianapolis Colts will likely take a quarterback. The Seattle Seahawks pick fifth, followed by Detroit at sixth. The rest of the top 10 (in order from seven to 10) consists of the Las Vegas Raiders, Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles.
