The National Football League was really upset at the Detroit Lions on Thursday.
According to NFL insider Peter King, a Detroit Lions official revealed that the league got heated with them because they quickly turned in their draft card. After the Jacksonville Jaguars took Travon Walker No. 1 overall, the Lions submitted the pick of Aidan Hutchinson just one minute later.
“We turned the card in so fast the league got mad at us,” a Lions official told King.
The league reportedly told the Jacksonville Jaguars to run the clock all the way down before making their selection, even though the team already knew who they wanted. The Lions either weren’t told the same information or simply did not care to wait to put their pick in.
The NFL Draft has become an incredible TV event for the league and they wanted to milk every second of coverage that it possibly could. Despite knowing who was going first last year, the Jags were told to wait seven minutes before announcing their first overall pick of Trevor Lawrence.
Detroit had its heart set on Hutchinson and once it was confirmed he was not going to Jacksonville, he got the call he was going to his hometown team.

“I was just praying the Lions were going to take me,” he said after the draft. “It’s a little bit scar when you get in that green room and the Lions are on the clock and you’re just sitting there like, ‘Dear God, please pick me.’ That was kind of what was running through my head.”
Because of social media, none of these picks are ever really s shock and surprise as Twitter is usually 2 or 3 picks ahead before things get announced on live TV.
