It’s down to two teams in the Deshaun Watson sweepstakes, as the Houston Texans and their quarterback have informed yet another team that they are out of the running.
The Carolina Panthers are the latest franchise to have their hearts broken. Prior to them, it was the Seattle Seahawks and the Cleveland Browns who got shot down. So what exactly happened to Carolina? Where did they do wrong during their pursuit of Watson?
According to the latest reports, it was their inability to commit to the third and fourth years of Deshaun’s contract.
This obviously wasn’t the only factors. You have to think that the Saints’ elite roster and the Atlanta Falcons’ home-state advantage also played a factor in Watson’s decision to trim the Panthers from his list of possible destinations.
Either way, it seems like it’s back to Sam Darnold for the Panthers — unless they decide to go after one of the other available quarterbacks. Jimmy Garoppolo makes sense. Or how about throwing the league another major curveball by going after the disgruntled Baker Mayfield?
