When he was traded from the Cleveland Browns to the Carolina Panthers, Baker Mayfield sacrificed a portion of his salary to facilitate the deal. Now, we are finding out that he can earn that money back.
As part of his contract with the Panthers, Mayfield can earn up to $3.5 million in incentives based on playing time and performance, per ESPN’s Field Yates:
If Mayfield plays 75 percent of the season and the team wins 10 games, he’ll earn $250,000. The team won just five games last year.
There are also some incentives connected to Mayfield’s completion percentage. The Carolina Panthers traded a conditional fifth-round pick to obtain Mayfield.
First things first, Mayfield will compete with Sam Darnold for the starting quarterback job in Carolina.
In all, Mayfield threw for 3,010 yards, 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 14 games played while going 6-8 as the starter.
