Earlier this month, there were heavy reports on the New England Patriots inquiring about San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo before re-signing Cam Newton.
Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard reported two weeks ago that the Patriots’ getting Jimmy G was their “Plan A” at quarterback.
Last Thursday, Bedard appeared on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Felger & Mazz” and indicated that New England hasn’t closed the door on Garoppolo.
The two teams have spoken, but the talks have gone nowhere so far.
“Basically, the way it’s gone this offseason, there have been talks and the 49ers just won’t engage,” Bedard said, via NESN.com. “In the terms that I’ve heard, they’re screwing around and they’re being, like, ‘I don’t wanna do this until we have something.’ … And the Patriots have basically said, “Alright, we’re out, we’re doing something else.’
“They can’t afford to wait around. And, so, I think that’s what the Patriots did. … Now, there is some belief that … the 49ers just release Jimmy. I think there’s a little bit of hope of that. But, again, that’s just hope.”

Bedard adds that the Patriots still have the ability to acquire Garoppolo if the situation in San Francisco leads to a divorce.
“It’s not out of the realm of possibility that the 49ers release Garoppolo at some point with the 25 million (dollars) he’s on their books, and maybe they see, ‘We’re going to do this. We’re going to do that in the draft,'” Bedard added while sharing what he heard from someone else. “That is possible. So look, there is a light on for Jimmy G. Trust me. And it will probably always stay on for Jimmy G.”
