The New York Jets are the latest team to have held a visit with free-agent star quarterback Derek Carr.
While the team is keen on adding the Pro Bowl signal-caller, they are keeping their options open and remain interested in Aaron Rodgers, with the veteran potentially also available this offseason.
That is according to Jeff Darlington of ESPN, who reported on Monday that Carr’s meeting with the Jets was very positive, with the team convinced he’s the type of QB who could lead them to a Super Bowl.
“I’m told it was a very positive meeting, that the Jets really believe that Derek Carr is the type of quarterback that can lead them to a potential championship. They also believe that the meeting went really well,” Darlington noted. “Here’s the rub, though. Aaron Rodgers still lingers, and the team also remains fascinated in the possibility of adding him.”
Darlington also revealed that Rodgers hasn’t informed the Green Bay Packers of his intentions for 2023. The Jets could be annoyed by this as Carr could join another team while they wait on a decision from Rodgers. They could end up losing out on both fronts as Rodgers wouldn’t be guaranteed to join them even if he is seeking a trade, while it’s also possible he retires.
The Jets reckon they’re a QB away from success given their positive start to last season. They no longer believe in Zach Wilson, having benched him twice last term. The former second-overall pick is likely to be playing elsewhere in 2023 – it will be interesting to see who comes in as his replacement.
