Another party has emerged as a contender for Deshaun Watson. And it’s not a team that has been mentioned to this point.
In a surprise announcement, ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed that the Atlanta Falcons have emerged as a serious player in the battle for the Houston Texans quarterback.
Schefter goes on to add that Falcons owner Arthur Blank is “fond” of Watson — and that Deshaun has ties with the Atlanta that date all the way back to his days as a Falcons ball boy.
No word yet on whether or not Watson has met with the Falcons (or plans to meet with them), but you’d have to think he’d at least consider the possibility of playing for his hometown team. Then again, he has expressed an interest to play for a team that can contend right away. Does he really see the Falcons being that type of team with him on it?
As for what the Falcons would have to give up for the star quarterback, it would no-doubt include Atlanta’s 8th overall pick in the upcoming draft, along with their first-rounders in the next few seasons, and more. The Falcons do hold two second-rounders in 2022, thanks to the Julio Jones trade, so those could both be in play as well.

And finally, what happens to Matt Ryan in all of this? He still has two years left on a deal that makes him practically unmovable — unless perhaps the Texans were willing to take on his contract for some added incentive, in the form of additional draft picks. It will be interesting to see what Atlanta has planned for their current face of the franchise, should they decided to go all-in on Watson.
