If the Tennessee Titans decide to begin a rebuild this offseason, the front office and coaching staff may want to consider trading superstar running back Derrick Henry.
The two-time rushing champion is still among the NFL’s premier running backs, but he’s also 29 years of age. Running backs in today’s NFL hardly play at a high level past their late 20s, and Henry’s trade value isn’t going to get any higher at this point.
On Tuesday’s edition of ESPN’s “Get Up!” (h/t Zach Dimmitt of Bills Central at Sports Illustrated’s FanNation) NFL insider Jeff Darlington proposed a blockbuster trade idea in which the Titans would trade their star running back to the Buffalo Bills:
“You want to trade a guy before it’s too late. Maybe they get something. Trade away Derrick Henry to the Buffalo Bills. Just speculating here, but man, that’d be a fun one.”
Devin Singletary was Buffalo’s leading rusher in 2022 with 819 yards and five rushing touchdowns. But the 25-year-old is slated to become a free agent next month, and the Bills may feel inclined to bring in a more proven running back anyway.
Buffalo hasn’t had a 1,000-yard rusher since 2017, when perennial Pro Bowler LeSean McCoy ran for 1,138 yards. Josh Allen is one of the game’s premier dual-threat quarterbacks, so adding a world-class rusher like Henry to the group would take this offense to a whole new level.
But GM Brandon Beane has limited cap space to work with. He also has to address the leaky offensive line, the wide receiver room and holes on the defense. Trading for Henry makes sense on paper, but Beane would have to perform a series of cap gymnastics to make the move work.
