Tennessee Titans superstar running back Derrick Henry had some interesting post-game comments about his future following the club’s Week 15 home loss to the Houston Texans.
The Titans’ 19-16 overtime loss clinched a second consecutive losing season for Mike Vrabel and company. This is obviously not something Henry is used to, as the Titans recorded winning seasons in each of his first six years and qualified for the postseason four times (2017, 2019, 2020 and 2021).
Speaking to reporters after Sunday’s loss, Henry commented about the possibility of finishing out his tenure with the only NFL team he’s ever played for, via ESPN’s Turron Davenport:
“Yeah, definitely today you had that feeling (that it could be the end of my career with the Titans). I had hope of kind of slipping in there (the playoffs), and then being eliminated with three games left. I’ve been here my whole career. Definitely wanted to go out strong, which that isn’t the case…I’ll try to give it my all in these last three games and leave it all on the field.”
In a bit of a surprise move, the Titans decided not to trade Henry despite looking nothing like a postseason contender ahead of the trade deadline. As such, the Titans face a strong likelihood of losing the two-time rushing champion and 2020 Offensive Rookie of the Year for nothing in 2024 free agency.
It’s well-known among football pundits and fans by now that most running backs tend to slow down by their 30th birthdays. But Henry remains one of the game’s elite running backs, as he entered Monday night with the fifth-most rushing yards (884).
