Josh McDaniels is the new man in Las Vegas, but controversy has already started surrounding Derek Carr’s future.
On Monday, McDaniels committed to at least “trying to build around” Carr, per The Athletic’s Vic Tafur.
“Derek’s going to have to make decisions about what’s best for him and we have to try to do what’s right for the team,” McDaniels said when asked about discussions regarding an extension for Carr, per Tafur. “There will be a sweet spot in there hopefully for everybody.”
The comments from McDaniels didn’t seem overly controversial, but Tim Younger, Carr’s agent, took it that way.
“Clubs always do ‘what is best for the team’ in every situation. Players (even QBs) don’t expect teams to do ‘what is best for the player.’ Successful negotiations always end in a sweet spot,” Younger wrote in the tweet. “That said, our practice is not to comment publicly regarding ongoing negotiations.”

Carr threw for a career-high 4,804 yards in 2021 and led the Raiders to a playoff appearance despite losing a key receiver in Henry Ruggs and a head coach in Jon Gruden in the middle of the season.
It’s early in the negotiation period for Carr and the Raiders and it’s hard to imagine a deal doesn’t get done.
“Derek’s fit on the team as a player is obviously what we’re looking for and what we’re trying to build around,” McDaniels said. “Our relationship continues to grow.”
The Raiders made a big move to help Carr by trading for Davante Adams, so his numbers should be even better in 2022.
