Say what you will about Derek Carr as a quarterback, the man is a pretty smart dude.
The New Orleans Saints signal-caller has his team out to a 2-0 start, and he may have a cool helmet hack to thank for it.
Prior to his team’s week 1 game against the Tennessee Titans, Saints tight end Tayson Hill noticed something different about Carr’s helmet. Specifically, he noticed Carr had something over the earholes of his helmet. Carr then went on to explain how it helps him block out the noise and hear the play, even in rowdy atmospheres like Kansas City’s.
We’re not sure exactly what Carr is using to cover his earholes. Tape? A customized piece of plastic? Whatever it is, it’s serving it’s purpose if Carr’s able to hear plays at a place like Arrowhead Stadium (where he often visited during his time with the Raiders).
However, we do have a couple of questions about this helmet hack, like why is he wearing it for a home game? (The Saints were at home against the Titans in week one.)
And doesn’t this prevent quarterbacks from being able to hear what’s going on around them during the play? Sometimes it helps to be able to hear when an oncoming rusher is breathing down your back. You’ve got to think it’s a lot harder to do that when you have something covering your earholes.

Either way, the Saints are 2-0 and Carr can hear the offensive play-calls clearly. I guess that’s all that matters right now.
