The Detroit Lions have cut a former second-round wide receiver only weeks after trading for him.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Denzel Mims has been waived by the team following an ankle injury that led to a calf injury during rehab.
Mims, who joined the Lions via a trade from the Jets on July 20th, sustained the injury in practice on August 5 and made a brief return a week later. However, he was forced back to the sidelines shortly after.
“We’ll see. Structurally he’s good. We’ll see how it feels,” head coach Dan Campbell told reporters after questions about the player’s health earlier this week.
The WR wasn’t involved in the recent joint practices with the Jacksonville Jaguars, even with Detroit Lions losing Jameson Williams to a hamstring injury and Amon-Ra St. Brown to an ankle issue on Wednesday
“He’s in there,” Campbell said about Mims after being asked whether the Lions would look to add receiving talent. “He’s in the room … We’ll see.”

The Jets would have waived Mims had they not found a trade partner. They ended up getting a conditional sixth-round pick and a seventh-round pick for 2025 in exchange.
The 25-year-old had impressed in training and was expected to play a significant role for the NFC side in 2023. It’s unfortunate that an injury has erased all of the possibilities.
