The Denver Broncos have reportedly decided on their top choice for the vacant head coaching position.
During the latest edition of his “The Herd with Colin Cowherd”, the veteran FOX Sports analyst reported that the Broncos and quarterback Russell Wilson want Sean Payton.
Payton resigned from the New Orleans Saints’ organization last year after 15 seasons on the job (he was suspended the entire 2012 season because of the Bountygate scandal). Because he remains under contract with the team, the Saints stand to receive trade compensation from the team that hires Manning.
The Broncos fired Vic Fangio after three seasons on the job and replaced him with Nathaniel Hackett, who previously served as the Green Bay Packers’ offensive coordinator. But Hackett was fired a day after a Week 16 blowout loss to the Los Angeles Rams, and Jerry Rosburg finished out as the interim coach.
Known for his offensive genius and success with quarterbacks, Payton would be an enticing hiring for a Denver team that desperately needs Wilson to rebound from a disastrous 2022 season. We’ll just have to wait and see how it all plays out.
