The Denver Broncos said they were going to go all out in their pursuit of a big name head coach, and it looks like they got their man.
News broke today that the Broncos will be hiring Sean Payton as their new head coach.
Payton will be the team’s third head coach in three years, and he’s easily their most expensive. In order to hire the former Super Bowl champion, Denver had to make a trade for him with the New Orleans Saints. And for the second straight offseason, the organization gave up a ton of draft capital to get their guy.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter the Broncos are sending a 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 second-rounder to the Saints in exchange for Sean Payton and a 2024 third-round pick.
It should be noted that the first-round pick is not Denver’s own pick. They traded that already to the Seattle Seahawks for Russell Wilson last offseason.

Rather, this pick is the 49ers’ 29th overall selection. It was originally sent to Miami by the Niners when they moved up in 2021 to select Trey Lance third overall. The Dolphins then flipped it to the Broncos at the 2022 trade deadline in exchange for Bradley Chubb.
And now it belongs to the Saints, along with the Broncos’ second rounder next year. If Payton can unlock Russell Wilson once again and get the offense performing like most expected it would, it’ll all be worth it for Denver…
If not, it could be yet another move that sets this organization back another half-decade.
