After a failed season with the lesser-known Nathaniel Hackett, the Denver Broncos are looking to take a different approach in their coaching search this time around.
According to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, the Broncos are expected to “swing big” as they search for a new head coach for the 2023 season. And that’s not an exaggeration either, as Rapoport has pointed to three of the most popular names in the business in Sean Payton, Jim Harbaugh and Dan Quinn.
While intriguing, each of these candidates also comes with their own possible roadblocks.
Sean Payton is still under contract with the New Orleans Saints. So that means the Broncos would not only need the Saints’ permission to speak to Payton, but they would also likely have to give up some draft capital if they wanted to sign him. And after the Russell Wilson trade last offseason, draft capital is not something that the Broncos have a whole lot of.
Harbaugh, on the other hand, wouldn’t cost them any draft picks. But after interviewing with the Minnesota Vikings last offseason, the current Michigan Wolverines head coach vowed that he would never return to the NFL. Will he hold try on that promise?
And finally, there’s Quinn. He likely has the least amount of issues preventing him from joining the Bronocs. In fact, he was considered a candidate for the job last season before Denver hired Hackett. The only real thing that could stop Quinn (besides his own choice) is the possibility that the Cowboys decide to promote him to their head coaching position should Mike McCarthy endure another playoff failure.
