In a matter of minutes, two NFL head coaching positions were filled on Tuesday.
Moments after it was reported that the Denver Broncos completed a trade with the New Orleans Saints to land Sean Payton for their head coaching position, it was also announced that the Houston Texans have hired DeMeco Ryans as their new head coach.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news.
Ryans was one of the top head coaching candidates in this year’s cycle after a successful two-year stint as the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive coordinator. This season, the 49ers finished first in both yards and scoring defense.
The 49ers reached their third NFC Championship Game in four seasons, losing to the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday.
Before his coaching career, Ryans was a standout linebacker for the Texans (2006 to 2011) and the Eagles (2012 to 2015). Now, Ryans heads back to the franchise where he commenced his successful playing career.
