Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders detailed how close he actually was to becoming the new HC of the Dallas Cowboys, the team he starred for from 1995 to 1999
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones parted ways with Mike McCarthy after the latter’s five-year contract expired in January. Jones spoke to Deion Sanders about the team’s head coaching vacancy, but the job went to offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.
Given Coach Prime’s celebrity status and lack of coaching experience in the NFL, many thought Jones would hire him to market the Cowboys’ brand further. So, was Sanders-to-Dallas really close to happening?
Not exactly, the Pro Football Hall of Famer explained during an interview with Stephen A. Smith on ESPN’s “First Take” program.
“It’s intriguing. Now, I did think about it, like, what are the possibilities? But I think at this point in time, I’m called to the college game. I’m called to the young men, I’m called to those cities, those towns, those communities. That’s who I’m called for to make impact in that at this stage and age of my life.”
Deion Sanders coached the Jackson State Tigers’ football program for three years before accepting a lucrative offer from the Buffaloes. “Prime Time” has compiled a 13-12 coaching record through his first two years in Boulder.

Deion Sanders Made The Right Decision, But Did The Cowboys?
Jones’ decision to hire Schottenheimer as the new head coach of Dallas was widely scrutinized by fans and pundits. The latter was the offensive coordinator from 2022 to 2023, but McCarthy was the play-caller on that side of the ball.
Only time will tell if the Schottenheimer hiring works out. As for Sanders, no one can blame him for being committed to the Buffaloes program. If he wants to become an NFL coach one day, he must build up more experience in the NCAA first.
