Detroit Lions safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson sparked a Twitter beef with a 49ers wide receiver over video of a pregame fight on Sunday.
Gardner-Johnson has been out since Week 2 with a torn pectoral, and it looks like his season might be over, but that does not mean his trash talk is done.
After the Lions’ win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, Gardner-Johnson posted a comment on X about a pregame fight between the San Francisco 49ers and Cleveland Browns. Both teams got into a scuffle on the field involving Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, Trent Williams, Juan Thornhill, Elijah Moore, and several others.
Samuel could be seen launching into Thornhill with his helmet and giving him a little shove before backing off. Williams then came out of nowhere and blindsided Moore.
“You see Deebo run?” Gardner-Johnson posted. “Typical wide receiver behavior — then act hard when Trent saves him.”
Samuel wasted no time clapping back at Gardner-Johnson, posting a video of former Bears wide receiver Javon Wims swinging at Gardner-Johnson back in 2020.

Samuel and Gardner-Johnson have history as the Lions safety was a member of the Eagles team that defeated the 49ers in last year’s NFC Championship Game. Back in the offseason, Samuel stated the Eagles are his “most hated” team while also making it clear the rematch between Philadelphia and San Francisco in Week 13 remains at the forefront of his mind.
Samuel exited the game during the first quarter of the 49ers’ loss to the Browns with a shoulder injury and did not return.
The 49ers are not scheduled to face the Lions during the regular season, but with both teams sitting at 5-1, we could probably see them later on in the postseason.
