When the Arizona Cardinals released DeAndre Hopkins, all hell broke loose on which team would swoop in and grab him. The departure of this accomplished playmaker has sent shockwaves across the NFL landscape, leaving many speculating about his next destination.
One team that has emerged as a potential landing spot for Hopkins is the Detroit Lions.
On the I AM ATHLETE podcast, Hopkins openly listed the top five quarterbacks he’d like to play with. A bunch of quarterbacks did not make that list. One of them was Jared Goff.
However, the Detroit Lions have reportedly done their homework on Hopkins and it could possibly lead to a signing.
According to Nick Shook of NFL.com, the Detroit Lions could be a landing spot for Hopkins.
“A year ago, this would have been a laughable landing spot,” Shook said in his article. “But as free-agent signee David Montgomery said this week, Dan Campbell is a coach for whom players want to run through a wall. Hopkins would provide Detroit with an experienced target who could also help guide the team through what Lions fans hope will be a run to the postseason. And as long as Jared Goff can produce at a rate similar to his 2022 output, it would be an ideal pairing.”

The Lions are clearly on the rise after the 2022 season they had and how they finished. They are expected to be one of the teams to take over in the NFC North after Aaron Rodgers was traded to the New York Jets.
Jared Goff has turned the corner as the Lions quarterback. He went 5-16-1 in his first 22 games with Detroit, but is 7-2 over his last nine games.
Hopkins did add, to his list of ideal things on a new team, “a great defense. A great defense wins championships.” The Lions don’t have that, at least as far as it looks right now.
The Lions also have $23.7 million in cap space, which ranks fourth in the NFL. If both sides could agree, a pairing may be in the making.
While Hopkins is undoubtedly a remarkable player, it is unlikely that the Lions will pursue him as his potential contract demands would have negative implications for the Lions’ future.
