If C.J. Stroud has plans of winning the starting quarterback job in Houston, he will not be receiving help for it from a player currently on the team.
Last month, the Houston Texans drafted Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback C.J. Stroud with the No. 2 overall pick, presumably, cementing him as their future plan at the position. Not everybody in the QB room thinks that job is gone.
Davis Mills, the team’s current starter, is still on the roster, and based on what he stated on Tuesday, he is not going down without a fight.
Despite the commitment in Stroud — Mills has no plans on mentoring him because he wants the job.
“I’m still competing for that starting job,” Mills said on Tuesday. “I mean, since I was drafted into the NFL I’ve been in a competition. I don’t think anything is going to change. It’s been great to get to know C.J. [Stroud]. He’s a great guy.”
Last season, Mills played a lot and impressed nobody, which is why the team has the second overall pick in the draft. He finished the year with the third-lowest quarterback rating among qualified players in the entire NFL – ahead of only Jets QB Zach Wilson, and Steelers rookie, Kenny Pickett.

Mills appeared in 15 games this season, completing 292 of 479 passes for 3,118 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions, all of which was a step back from his strong rookie season.
Mills is just 5-19-1 as a starter for Houston.
However, he now has a chip on his shoulder and is now more motivated than ever to turn things around and hold on to his job.
“A lot of it I think I’ve always been a very self-motivated person,” Mills said. “I want to be the best player I can be. Obviously, this is kind of another stress factor kind of pushing me to be my best.”
Mills will get his chance to prove himself as OTAs begin for the Texans.
It’s a crowded QB room with Mills (26 career starts) joined by 35-year-old Case Keenum (64 starts) and 21-year-old C.J. Stroud. May the best QB win.
