David Montgomery is probably going to have a harder time endearing himself to Detroit Lions fans after an embarrassing workout incident that has the internet laughing.
The running back is looking forward to his first season with the team and was signed by general manager Brad Holmes mostly because of his ability to evade tackles, having missed 46 of them to rank 14th in the NFL in such regard last season.
The Lions offense is tipped to gain significant yardage from the rush in 2023, with Jahmyr Gibbs also having been selected early in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft.
“I feel like we can take a big jump,” offensive coordinator Ben Johnson was quoted as telling FOX 2. “When you watch all of our plays from last year, it’s about doing it time and time again. These four- and five-yard runs, they really should be eight, nine or even more if we can break a tackle.”
It appears that David became efficient at escaping tackles because he doesn’t have the strength and endurance to ride them out. As you can see in the video below, the RB is training with a workout band strapped to a large tire and runs out of steam before getting yanked back in a most embarrassing fashion.

The clip supposedly had Montgomery’s Lions teammate Alim McNeil in tears, with the defensive tackle reacting to it with the comment “I am crying !!!!!”
I’m sure Lions fans are just happy to see Monty get up and shake that one off. Needless to say, things could have ended up a lot worse.
